What is GTM engineering?
GTM engineering is the discipline of treating go-to-market as infrastructure. Not campaigns, not headcount, not heroics — systems. A GTM engineer sits between marketing, sales and code, and wires together the machinery that connects them: how leads get found, enriched, scored, routed, worked and measured.
The role exists because the biggest blockers to growth are usually operational. Leads arrive and nobody responds for hours. CRM records are thin, so reps research by hand. Attribution is guesswork, so budget follows opinion. Every one of those is a systems problem — and systems problems have engineering solutions.
What the job actually looks like
Routing engines that get a hot lead to the right rep in minutes instead of hours. Enrichment pipelines and AI research agents that keep 60k accounts scored on fit and intent. Attribution models that end the marketing-vs-finance argument with data. Internal tools that let the GTM team answer its own questions.
The test is always the same: did the system change a revenue number? Response time, conversion rate, pipeline sourced, spend efficiency. If it didn't move one of those, it's not GTM engineering — it's tinkering.
Why it matters now
AI made this discipline urgent. Agents can now do the research, personalisation and triage that used to take a team of SDRs — but only if someone wires them into the stack correctly. That wiring is the job. AI GTM is where the discipline is heading; revenue systems are what it produces.
